Elisa Deval, an Italian jewelry maker and educator, is known for her captivating exploration of the Japanese technique of nunome zogan. Delve into her background, training, passion for disseminating knowledge about traditional techniques, sources of inspiration, and valuable advice for stepping beyond comfort zones.
She spent her formative years in the tranquil countryside of Tuscany, Italy, where she was nurtured by her parents' creative spirits. With her father as a contemporary artist and her mother a skilled doll maker, Elisa learned to perceive the essence beyond surface appearances, a gift that resonates in her work today. Exposed to a diverse array of art books, particularly those showcasing ethnic arts, during her childhood, Elisa's curiosity was ignited, especially towards Japan. This early exposure fueled her passion for exploring various crafts from around the globe.
Elisa's journey into the world of jewelry making was shaped by her education at the Alchimia Contemporary Jewellery School in Florence, where she studied under the guidance of esteemed jewelry artist Manfred Bischoff and other renowned mentors. Immersive experiences in Japan, coupled with the generosity of her mentors, provided her with the opportunity to share and promote traditional techniques such as nunome zogan in contemporary jewelry.
